Lesson 5, “Strengthen the Sacred Mix” 1 Peter 3:1-7

1 Peter 3:1-7 is very important for women in today’s hostile world. We need to be pure and reverent to everyone all the time. We can become upset of course, but we need to be pure and reverent at the same time.

My favorite and the most instructive part for me discussed talking to much and Christian wives not discussing faith to their unbelieving husbands. When you have the time look up Proverbs 10:19, 13:3, 17:1, 17:28, 18:2 to learn how talking less actually says more. I have discovered that I talk too much. Also if I don’t speak a lot, the showing of my faith will come through and it will help others become faithful.

This lesson will help me become a better woman.k

My thoughts- I submitted a request and was chosen to take part in Kregel’s graduated tour for this book. We were asked to write our review around one of three different topics: science, health, and spirituality. I chose health.

I began reading this book knowing nothing about the epigenome or how it related to our health. When I finished the book I was very surprised and awed that we can so easily control how we can effect future generations in their health. There are some epigenomes that are genetic as they are passed on in the child-bearing years. That is why it is so important to have good epigenetic health during our youth to the child-bearing years, because the changed epigenome can be passed from generation to generation. That is why it is so important not to smoke, have a good diet, positive mental attitude, and plenty of physical exercise.

The elderly may be helped with epigenetic reprogramming to get rid of errant methyl tags in the future.

I highly recommend this book. It may have some parts that could be difficult for the lay person to understand, but we all need to know what we can do to make our epigenomes the healthiest.

Lesson 4- “Shadow the Servant” 1 Peter 2:11-25

This week I was really drawn to “Core Two: Living for Christ in a Hostile Society.”

People have always lived in hostile societies, our just seems worse than previous years, since there is such a media focus on the negative and not the positive. I think over time (a long time) that social media could improve the hostile society, because so many positive messages could be posted.

Peter’s message can speak to us and anyone at any point in time, but telling us how to best adjust to all of the negativity. One of his most important points is that we must submit to those in authority.

The book of Daniel shows a good example of how to submit to authority, yet be able to do what is best according to the Lord. Daniel asked in Daniel 1:13-17 to have a trial period where he and the other men with him could eat their food and then if it didn’t work they would eat the King’s food. Daniel was able to maintain his integrity while submitting to the king.

Government officials around the world will learn from people who show Christ-like behavior how it should be. And we need to remember while submitting to them that when Christ comes back they will have to answer to him about their transgressions.

I am going to do my best to live my life with Christ and submit to government officials in our hostile society.

Carla Anne Coroy has been married to Trent for eighteen years and they homeschool their four children in Manitoba, Canada. She has worked with Youth For Christ, founded a MOPS chapter, and served as the Director of Crown Financial Ministries, Central Canada. She regularly speaks to women’s groups as a gifted speaker.

My thoughts- I have been a solo parent twice before, when my husband was in the military and when he was working two jobs. And I was very interested in this book and what Carla Anne Coroy had to say.

This book was very easy to read and it was hard to put down. I did think the first half of the book was depressing. It was hard for me to read this part of the book, because I could see how some women reading it could get ideas on how they shouldn’t act, like emotionally divorcing their husband or wallowing in self-pity. It can help women recognize their feelings and how they can cope with them.

I really thought the statement on page 35 about not fantasizing about the perfect man, was important. It is very important to not read books where you fantasize about or be around people who cause that feeling. Your husband really will not measure up when you compare him with others.

I enjoyed the chapter from Carla Anne Coroy’s husband. I think it would have been nice if there had been more chapters written by him or some of his opinions in each of the chapters. It helps me to read the opinions of different men to help me better understand where my husband is coming from.

I thought this book was good. I would recommend it to women who are having a difficult time being a solo parent or if you are a mentor to solo parents. There is also a study guide and personal reflection journal available at her website, www.carlaanne.com.

Lesson 3- “Rejoice That You Rock”

This week went more smoothly for me. I am finally getting the hang of doing a daily study and answering the questions in a timely, but thoughtful manner.

I have been reading the series, Elsie Dinsmore, by Martha Finley, so this week I found myself very interested in “Core Two: Your Ministry as a Priest.” Those books are Christian and have many different Bible verses and the characters do a great deal with administering their priestly duties. The books take place in the late 1800’s so the men have a major part in the books, but the women are important as well. And the women’s priestly roles are as parents and that is the way I see myself. I am a priest in my own household to my children. I could also be a priest to other women, but I don’t feel that I should be a priest in a church.

About the Author-

Mel Starr has taught history for many years in the Michigan public school system. He has studied medieval surgery and medieval English. He is married and has two grown daughters and seven grandchildren.

My thoughts- I have not read any of the other books in this series, but I am going to have to get a hold of the other three books and any others that follow.

I couldn’t put this book down. I thought I was in 1366 Bampton and living the mystery along with Hugh and Kate.

The dialogue and use of words from the 1300’s was great. Many times when books are written for this time period the dialogue and use of vocabulary are not authentic. This book shows how knowledgeable Mel Starr is in medieval surgery and medieval English.

I would highly recommend this book. I am going to tell my local libraries about this book. Go out and pick up a copy today!

Lesson 2- “Respond like a Bone-Dry Babe”

Lesson two has been thought provoking. I really enjoyed studying Core 4 (“Love One Another") and Core 5 (Satisfy Your Craving”).

I liked Core 4, because it shows that if we can truly love our neighbors then we are loving and obeying God. In Core 5, I was captivated by the thought of spiritual milk. Comparing it so much to a mother’s milk turned me off until I thought of a cow instead of a human mother. We do need that milk, literal or figurative, and we will become much better Christians if we satisfy our cravings for the word of God (the spiritual milk). These two cores has shown me a lot in how I need to grow in Christ, with how I treat others and how I study the Bible. I need to make a daily effort to do both. I need to reach out to at least one person to show them how much they are loved by me (and God) and I need to read the Bible, so I can better help those people and myself. And I think I am going start in my own family and then work from there.

One thing that is concerning me as I am reading and doing this Bible study, is that it is taking much longer than an 1 1/2 just to do the Core sections. In the introduction it said that this study would take that amount of time and I think it takes me around 1/2 an hour to do one Core. I am hoping that as I become fluent in doing this Bible study that my time will improve, because I am running out of time in the day to do what I need to do, perhaps this is a sign I need to make more time for God.

Lesson 1

I was excited to learn about this study and participate for this is the first week and we have completed Lesson 1, which covered 1 Peter 1:1-12.

Sue Edwards has developed three levels of study: “core” questions, “digging deeper” questions, and “summit” questions. Each level takes a great amount of time and resource dedication. As the participant, we needed to pick the level that would work the best for us. I have chosen the second level, “digging deeper,” because I have the outside resources of atlas, Bible dictionary, and concordance.

I really enjoy the way this book is laid out and I am doing one Core a day within each lesson. And the Living Stone Story was a great addition. I am looking forward to reading each one.

I can’t wait for Lesson 2!

About the Authors- C. Marvin Pate is the author and editor of numerous items related to eschatology and Revelation. He is the professor of biblical studies Ouachita Baptist University.

My thoughts- Reading Revelation is a wonderful book for Bible studies, college student, professor, pastor or anyone interested in the different view points.

If I were in a Bible study and we were studying the book of Revelation, I would make sure we had this book to study the different views. And this could help us understand why there are different views and how we in a group can discuss the views and either agree or agree to disagree.

I liked the Greek text and literal translation, because I knew where the Bible verses began and ended. I had a difficult time in some parts of the book, because there was not enough separation between the Bible verses and viewpoints.

I would recommend this book to all who are or plan on studying the book of Revelation

The Bible teaches equality, racial integration and freedom. Will the church be that way? There is a sense of optimism, but it will only happen if individual churches follow this book.

About the Authors- Kenneth A. Mathews teaches Old Testament studies and biblical interpretation at Beeson Divinity School.

M. Sydney Park teaches New Testament studies and biblical interpretation at Beeson Divinity School.

My thoughts- I thought this book was very interesting. The best part of the book was the questions at the end of each chapter. They helped tie all of the information together and help me realize that my local church is very inclusive. Sometimes though in my local church I wonder how much the ethnic groups, the Africans and the natural-born Americans, spend time together as the adult ethnic groups have their own classes.

I highly recommend this book to pastors, elders, deacons, etc., but I also think it would be a good resource for all church members.

About the Editor- Daniel B. Wallace is a director of the Center for the Study of New Testament Manuscripts, professor of New Testament studies at Dallas Theological Seminary, and senior New Testament editor of the NET Bible.

My thoughts- This was an interesting book. It made me think about the many different ways the New Testament has been corrupted. I have not read any of Bart Ehrman’s work, so I would recommend reading his writings before reading this book.

I found the footnotes on each page to be a great distraction. I had a difficult time separating the text with the notes, so I think it would be better if the footnotes were at the end of each chapter.

I would not recommend this book for a lay person or a pastor who has not studied in textual criticism, patristics, and New Testament apocryphal literature. If you have knowledge in these subjects and knew something of Bart Ehrman this book is for you.

What C (girl, recently turned 6, Kindergarten) Thought-

I like the Big Book of History. It talked about mummification, the Trojan Horse, and Egyptians. It discussed building with rocks. I enjoyed the pictures. I learned a lot.

I liked everything. I would recommend this book for kids my age.

What B (boy, age 7, almost 8, second grade) Thought-

I liked the Big Book of History. My favorite sections were the “Did You Know?” My favorite one was “water then ice.” It dates back to day one, when the earth was made and continues to 2010.

It was fun laying it out on the floor. It really did stretch fifteen feet. I also had fun zooming along in history.

I think book is good for kids my age.

Dad’s Thoughts-

It’s nice to have a visual timeline to help put events, inventions and people into perspective. Kids can see that “technology” existed long before the iPod, iPad and Playstation 3. Comparing World Events, Biblical/Christianity, Civilizations, and Inventions/Technology on the same timeline is like putting pieces of a puzzle together. The resulting picture makes sense. Too many times today only bits and pieces of information are taught to our kids leaving gaps in their education. The Big Book of History makes great strides in filling those gaps. Well worth the money.

My Thoughts-

I loved the Big Book of History. Its panels folded out fifteen feet and were full of information.

B wanted to take a look at it as soon as I opened the package. He had fun unfolding the time-line and zooming along in history. B and I enjoyed laying on the floor learning about the history of the world.

C and I spent less time as this was not a current interest of hers, but she did enjoy the time she spent with me reading the information she wanted to learn.

I enjoyed everything. I thought the divisions of Biblical/Christianity, World Events, Inventions/Technology, and Civilizations/Empires was a great idea. It really helped put history into perspective for me.

I would highly recommend this book to everyone, because there is a lot to learn and it can be a lot of fun.

Our Experience- B and C were very excited when I showed this book to them. They enjoyed looking at the photos and then we would read about an animal of their choice.

We also used this book to learn more about worms when we were working on our nature study.

We have really enjoyed using this book for school and for fun.

What C (girl, who just turned 6, Kindergarten) thought- I liked it. It was a good book. There were lots and lots of animals. There were rabbits, shrews, starfish and clown fish. Momma read to me about the aardvarks.

I liked everything. I would recommend this book for kids my age.

What B (boy, age 7, second grade) thought- The World of Animals was good. I really liked it.

In this book you learn about worms, amphibians, mammals and much more. We are mammals. If you are a crocodile you are not a mammal.

One of the animals you learn about is the rhino. In school we learned about worms.

I liked reading about the snakes. I want to have a rattlesnake when I am older, with its venom taken out.

I think this book is good for kids my age for school or fun.

My thoughts- I think this book is a wonderful addition to any homeschool or library.

color photos and illustrations
charts listing main characteristics of animals
dividing of animals into sections in the “Table of Contents” from simple animals (jellyfish) to complex (mammals)

I highly recommend this book. It was fun and informational to read.

What Dad thought- The thing that gets your attention is the color leaping off the pages from the stunning photos. The illustrations, drawings and charts add another dimension to this book that will certainly aid in attracting and keeping kid’s attention.

This is definitely a must have to any collection. The quality is superb and even if the kids just turn the pages for something to do they’ll still take something away every time.

I liked it. I think it is good for kids my age to have read to them. I like science. I learned about the earth. The earth is not flat. I learned about molecules, atoms, quarks and other tiny little things.

Dad’s thoughts-

Another great book by Parragon and Jinny Johnson. The subjects in each of the six scientific sections has two pages of information making it an easy and interesting read for kids. Lots of colorful & detailed pictures, graphs, illustrations and condensed biographies keep your interest in the subject.

It can be read to children just learning to read and is a good read for those more advanced in reading. This book gives a good basic explanation of each subject yet provides enough information for those wanting to pursue in-depth research.

The experiments in the back of the book are the icing on the cake. They are simple enough for the kids to do but need an adult for one or two items in each experiment. This is a nicely done covert way to get parents and their children to spend time together. I give this book 5 out of 5 Bunsen Burners.

My thoughts-

I really enjoyed looking at and studying this book. I have always enjoyed learning about science and World of Science discusses different areas of science to help me show my children the basics.

The kids and I had a lot of fun picking out the sections we would read and also learning about the scientists who were involved.

The most exciting part about the book was the selection of experiments we could choose from. It will be fun in future years to read sections of the book and the do the experiments that correspond.

I highly recommend World of Science to homeschooling families as a resource or to children who love science and want to learn more.

Our Experience- B, C, and I sat down and read the old testament stories in our pink Bible. We also spent a lot of time reading the new testament. B had a fun time reading it on his own and comparing it to what he has learned from his Bible.

My thoughts- I thought this was a wonderful Bible for babies and toddlers. It was similar to a small Bible when I was younger. I think this Bible would be a perfect baby gift and it could be used as the child gets older. I do think the word, “Baby’s,” could be removed though, so it could be focused on toddlers as well.

Kristina Stephenson did a wonderful job with the illustrations. They supplemented the text and were very simple for babies and young children.

I highly recommend this Bible to parents or anybody who has a little one to buy for.

What B (boy, almost eight, second grade) Liked and Disliked:

Baby’s Little Bible was a good Bible. They forgot parts in some of the stories. I didn’t really like that. They did not include the snake for Adam and Eve. I liked the illustrations. They were very good. I also liked the stories. They were good too.

I think this book is good for kids my age to read to themselves. And I also think this book is good for babies.

I like the book. I liked when Jesus was born. There were a lot of good stories in Baby’s Little Bible. I liked all the illustrations.

I would recommend this for your kids.

I found this book to be a good way to introduce the more well-known characters and stories of the Bible to our little ones. While it is general in nature, its good for our children to hear us telling the stories of the Bible. It’s as much about the stories as it is us spending time with our kids.

I am planning on making Granny’s Fruitcake and Orange Juice Balls with my children. And if we have time I would like to make more to take to people for presents.

I enjoyed seeing the large selection of traditional Christmas carols. The kids and I have decided that we’re going to learn some of these songs for school and sing them for friends and family.

Our Experience:

B and C were very excited to receive Problems in Plymouth. One of the favorite things the kids and I like to do together is read. This was one of the books we couldn’t put down. The kids wanted to read it for our school time reading and our nighttime reading.

My Thoughts:

I thought this book was fun to read to the kids. We spent some of our school days and some nights reading this book. B didn’t want to read this book himself until we read it together. I think he wanted to have the enjoyment of being surprised along with us. I know this was a work of fiction, but I have never seen the Pilgrims portrayed as such kind and Christian people before. I was very glad to see this portrayal.

The only part of this book that I was not sure about was the illustration of the Native American village with teepees instead of wigwams. I thought it was primarily just the Native Americans who lived on the plains that used teepees.

What B (boy, age seven, second grade) Liked and Disliked:

I liked everything about the book, except for Hugh. Hugh is mean. Beth and Patrick went to Plymouth in the Imagination Station. In the end Hugh went back to his proper time in England.

I think this book is good for kids my age to read to themselves or to have someone read to them.

What C (girl, age five, kindergarten) Liked and Disliked:

I liked it. They didn’t fight very much. Mr. Whittaker could not go into the Imagination Station, because Hugh had the ring. I think Hugh was an old man. Beth and Patrick got the ring back from Hugh.

I liked everything. It is good for kids my age.

Would I Recommend?:

I would highly recommend Problems in Plymouth. It should be in every public and school library.

B and C were very excited to receive Showdown with the Shepherd. One of the favorite things the kids and I like to do together is read. It didn’t take us too many nights to finish this book. The kids just wanted to keep reading and then we had to read it a second time.

My Thoughts:

I am always intrigued when authors have people go back in time and associate with people in living during that time. The authors did an excellent job of melding Beth and Patrick into David’s life and the war between the Israelites and Philistines.

Huge was a very addition to this storyline. He sure knows how to cause a lot of trouble. I think that the addition of Hugh along with King Saul and his army with their lack of faith helped B and C how faith in God is truly important.

What B (boy, age seven, second grade in the fall) Liked and Disliked:

I liked Showdown with the Shepherd. This story is in the Bible! My favorite part was when David killed Goliath, none of the other Israelites would do it, because they had no faith in God. The part I didn’t like was when Hugh made the catapult and sent burning tar covered rocks.

I think this book is good for kids my age to read to themselves or to have someone read to them.

What C (girl, age five, kindergarten) Liked and Disliked:

I liked the part when Goliath, because the Israelites won.

I didn’t like the catapult, because they threw the rocks right towards the Israelites camp. The second time they had loaded a boulder the knots had slipped. I also didn’t like the part with the bear, because it was rushing right at Beth and Patrick.

It is good for kids my age, except for the scary parts.

Would I Recommend?:

I would highly recommend Showdown with the Shepherd. I am going to tell my family, friends and librarians about this book and the rest in the series. I hope these books will also be audio books.

My thoughts-

This is a remarkable book that we can use to celebrate all Christian seasons. The folktale is wonderful and I could study the illustrations all day.

My kids really enjoyed reading this book. It came in the mail when our supervising teacher was here and B took it right away and read it to her. They both enjoyed the experience.

B, C, Dad and I enjoyed it again later as our bedtime story. I plan on reading this story to my children for Christmas and Easter every single year. And I will be saving this book for my grandchildren.

What B (boy, age seven, second grade) Liked and Disliked:

I liked The Three Trees. It was a good book. My favorite part was when the first tree was made into a manger and when Jesus was put into it. My second favorite part was when the second tree was made into a boat and it held Jesus. My third favorite part was rather sad. It was when the third tree was made into a cross and Jesus died on that cross. There were good illustrations. In one of the pictures there was even a rainbow. There was even a picture of a boat in the book. My favorite picture was when the innkeeper was putting hay into the manger and there were animals all around.

I think this book is good for kids my age. I think younger kids would like it too.

What C (girl, age five, kindergarten) Liked and Disliked:

I liked the first picture of the trees.

There is a cat in one of the pictures. I loved everything, but one part, when Jesus died on the cross. Joseph and Mary had baby Jesus. The fisherman caught a lot of fish when they went out to fish. Jesus came back to life.

It is good for kids my age and younger, like my two-year-old cousin.

Dad Says-

I enjoyed The Three Trees for several reasons. That it's ok to dream; that it's ok to dream big; when things don't go as planned don't give up; patience is a necessity; God has the ability to fulfill your dreams according to His plan. This is a book that can remind us and our children throughout the year to keep our hearts and thoughts on God while He lights the path before us.

My thoughts- I have had teachers who served in the Vietnam War and I have read books about the war, but this book made me feel as if I was in Vietnam living with Kristin and Luke. I laughed with them, cried with them, and felt their fears.

After Kristin returned to the states she suffered from PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder). This helped me realize what one of the latest families (husband served in Afghanistan) has been going through.

Catherine West did a tremendous writing Yesterday’s Tomorrow. I highly recommend this book. This book is for everyone and has danger, romance and heartbreak. I want people to learn more about the Vietnam War and what the people went through.

I am going to tell my friends, family and librarians about this book.

My thoughts-

I enjoy a good mystery especially when Christianity, history, and a good plot are involved the novel becomes even better.

When I received this book in the mail, I just had to open the package and start reading right away. I reluctantly had to put it down as I needed to fix our lunch. It wasn’t until after the kids went to bed that I was able to read the book. Needless to say it was a very late night. :)

Melanie Dobson has woven a story I think will be a classic. There were so many exciting events: people I thought were innocent were not and vice versa, Camden gained family members she didn’t know she had; and how her grandmother protected women who were in abusive relationships.

I highly recommend Refuge on Crescent Hill. It has something for everyone: mystery, American history, and romance. I will be sharing this title with my local librarians.

My thoughts-

This was an awesome book. Brian Goins was very wise to relate his book to sports. Many men relate well to sports and to explain marriage in that context, was pure genius.

The questions at the end of each chapter help the reader become more involved with the information in each chapter. “Paul’s Playbook for Playing Hurt,” which is also at the end of each chapter lists key tactics for a man to have a winning marriage. One play is, “Every man needs the guts to love like Christ.” A husband can take these plays and use them every day of his marriage.

I would highly recommend this book to all men who are thinking of getting married or are married. I am planning on purchasing this for the single men I know.

My thoughts-

I was excited to review this book. I am always interested in discovering how Bible and archeology chronologies match and the proof that I can either show or tell people when I want to help people believe in the Bible.

The most interesting part of this book is the idea that chronologies of Egypt and Israel are off. Up to 600 years! If those times periods are adjusted to the Bible chronology then everything lines up perfectly and the Bible is proven as fact. This book doesn’t describe how the chronologies have been determined so it would be helpful to add that information in future editions.

There is a modern map at the beginning of the book, but more historical maps would add a lot. I would really like to see more maps of the lands of each of the kings discussed.

Would I recommend? Yes! I think that anybody who desires to learn about the archeological proof of the Bible should read this book. Teachers/parents should add it to their history curriculum.

And all the photos are great too!!

About the Author- James P. Stobaugh and his wife have homeschooled their four children. He is well known in homeschooling and college/SAT preparation. He has a degree from Vanderbilt and Rutgers universities, and Princeton and Gordon-Conwell seminaries.

My thoughts- I thought this SAT prep. book was well laid out, but it is not for the faint of heart. This book will take the user quite a bit of time beginning in their freshman high school career, but I feel utilizing this program will help improve scores and their relationship with God.

There were two parts about this book that didn’t sit well with me: the quality of the essays and the lack of a practice test. If I were in the admissions department of a college I would not have accepted most of the essays as they were poorly written and rather boring. A practice test would help the student know exactly what to expect.

I recommend this book for students to strengthen their academics and their relationships with God.

What C (girl, age 5, Kindergarten) thought- I liked this Bible. I liked the stories of “Moses in the Bulrushes” and “The Golden Calf.” I liked the illustrations, especially of Samson and the lion.

Kids my age would like this book.

What B (boy, age 7, second grade) thought- I like the front cover with Noah and the ark. Flowers and an elephant are in the background. My two favorite stories are, “The Good Samaritan” and “The Unmerciful Servant.” I like the reference section called, “Exile and Return,” in 597 BC when King Nebuchadnezzar II captured Jerusalem.

I thought the whole book was very great. It would be good for kids my age to read to themselves.

My thoughts- I thought this story Bible was great! The stories were well written and as a family we learned a lot of historical information from the reference spreads. The map at the beginning of the Bible was nice too. It is always nice to be able to find the cities that are discussed in the Bible.

I would highly recommend this story Bible to all families who have young children and want teach them Bible stories.

Dad’s Thoughts- I like the illustrations. The information was detailed, but not enough to overwhelm you. The maps and pictures help to show that these are real places, instead of just reading about it, you can see where the events occurred. Overall it is a good buy.

My thoughts-

I was very intrigued when I had a chance to review this book. The phrase, “embracing a Biblical worldview & hanging on tight,” from the cover of the book had so much potential. Dan Phillips was able to deliver on showing us how to accept and accomplish the challenge of that phrase.

Part One had a lot of humor (mixed in with seriousness of the Fall) to make it a quick easy read. Once I started Part Two he really became serious, which showed me how important it is to him for us to properly approach the world and view Christ and the Bible as Christians.

I thought the summaries of each section were very important and relevant because the information was condensed and showed what was most important to him.

I thought this was an excellent, thought provoking book and I would recommend it to everyone who wants a different way of viewing life that just might make them a “world-tilting believer.”

What B (age 7, second grade) Thought- I like the story about Noah’s ark, but they forgot to put in Noah’s sons and their wives. There were wall clings, those were really fun. They were really fun, because we made a neat scene with them. Noah built a big ark to hold every kind of animal, two of every kind (one female and one male).

There were good illustrations. There were snakes, dogs, giraffes, pigs, turtles, monkeys and many more animals that I really enjoy.

I think this book is good for kids my age.

What C (age 5, kindergarten) Thought- I like the book. I think it was fun to have it read to me. My favorite part was the rainbow and the animals were safe inside Noah’s ark. Slowly the water began to evaporate and Noah sent out the dove to find dry land. And the sun slowly began to come out. And the rainbow began to come out as a sign that God would never flood the earth again.

I like the wall clings. It was fun putting them on the wall, instead of on the window or door.

I think it would be good for kids my age.

My thoughts-

My kids love Noah and the ark and wall clings, so this book was perfect for them. I read the book different times to them and B enjoyed reading it to C. After they put the wall clings on the wall, they looked at the illustrations to see what animals they had put on the wall.

I thought this book was cute and well written. I really enjoyed studying the illustrations on each page. The wall clings looked spectacular on our wall. I did remember to put them on one of the smooth walls in our house, because we stuck wall clings on our bumpy walls once and they did not stick.

I wondered why Noah’s sons and wives were not included. When I read the story of Noah’s ark, I like having all the characters and the rest of the complete story.

I highly recommend this story, because all kids should know the story of Noah’s ark and the wall clings make it even more fun.

I thought this book gave a tall order to fill, to change how women and girls are treated around the world.

I did agree with Danielle Strickland that politics, denominations, and hearts need to be changed about the way women are treated, but I don’t share her more liberal views of marriage, like that the person who knows more about the subject should make the final decision.

In a marriage I believe that the husband should always have the final say if an agreement can’t be made. I also believe that once there are children in a marriage, the wife needs to stay home while the kids are young, to give them the best start in life. Today the wife can always have a job on the internet if the family needs money.

I would recommend this book to all who want to learn what Jesus thought about women and girls and how we should treat them as Christians.

My thoughts-

I have really enjoyed reading this book. I have several blogs, cell phone and a television in the house. My husband and children also enjoy the technology we have, so as a family we need to notice how technology affects our relationship to God.

I have learned a lot from this book about how God has always provided us technology. Some of that technology has given clothing for Adam and Eve, knowledge for building the ark, and tools for making Jesus’ cross.

My favorite part of the book is the last chapter, “Recommendations,” where I learned the five steps on how to best use technology.

Valuation- Use Scripture to evaluate technology and ourselves to find the strengths and weaknesses
Experimentation- Try using or not using different kinds of technology
Limitation- Know our boundaries with technology, so we can still live our Christian values and lives

Our Experience:

I think Latin is one of those important languages to learn to help improve your English vocabulary and more easily learn other foreign languages.

The PDF videos and worksheets worked very well for us. We would were not working on the rest of our school work at the time of this review, so we were able to concentrate on learning one lesson a day. We did take more time on the more difficult lessons, like trying to learn the declensions.

Since C is just learning how to read she concentrated mostly on learning from the video, but we did work on the worksheets together. B had a lot of fun learning from the videos and working on the worksheets by himself. It was fun watching their eyes grow bright as they were able to figure out the answers to the questions.

Our favorite part was the translation section of the video. We had fun listening to Dwayne Thomas read the passage and repeating after him. We thought it was great that the passage we were translating were Biblically based.

What I Liked:

How B and C are eager to learn how to speak, read and write Latin.
As you are learning the parts of Latin grammar, you are also learning English grammar.
How the lesson worksheets complete the lessons by reinforcing what is learned on the video.

What I Disliked:

The casualness that the instructor sometimes had during the lesson. One example would be, when the phone rang and he ended the lesson to answer the phone.

What B (boy, age seven, officially in second grade) Liked and Disliked: I liked it. Some of the lessons were tricky and some were funny. Some of the worksheets were tricky, like lesson five about declensions. Declensions are going to be hard to memorize. There are five declensions to memorize.

In one of the lessons, Dwayne Thomas, the instructor, was talking on the phone. In another lesson he said the shopasaurus, became extinct because he bought so many things there was nothing left to buy.

I think Visual Latin: Lessons 1-10 is good for kids my age.

What C (girl, age five, kindergarten) Liked and Disliked: I don’t think Visual Latin is good for kids my age. The worksheets were hard, because of the reading and writing.

Mentioning Snuffleupagus and shopasaurus in the videos was funny. I liked the videos because some were funny and that helped me remember the lesson.

My thoughts-

I was really excited to review this book. I have been looking for a book that would help me learn how to apply the Bible in my life with my 21st century views. This book was the one!

I wanted to give this book my full attention, so I wanted the perfect Bible to use. I found one at my local library sale. It is a large one, so it stays flat when I need to read the important verses Krish Kandiah has mentioned, exactly what I wanted.

I made myself a travel journal and I was ready to begin my study of the Bible. It took me around 15 minutes every day to read the text and answer the questions. There were some questions throughout the book that were hard for me to answer, but I was able to figure them out.

My favorite day in the book was in Week 1 and in Day 2 about knowing how to apply Bible verses today. We are to look and understand what the original audience knew, ask God how to understand today, and see how we are to change our lives.

Would I recommend? Yes I would! I really enjoyed this book and I am planning on ordering it for most of the adults in my family for Christmas. I know that by reading this book they will gain a greater understanding on how to apply the Bible in their lives.

Bombus the bumblebee is a lovable bee, who is learning about self-acceptance and the acceptance of others from the honeybees. Bombus learns that God made him exactly the way he was supposed to be made. God did create diversity and we need to learn about it.

What C (girl, age 5, Kindergarten) thought- I liked Bombus. I liked that he couldn’t go into skinny blossoms. Bumblebees are fatter that honeybees. The honeybees said Bombus wasn’t right for flying, because honeybees have zig-zag dances. And they all took flight and he watched them. He thought he was meant to crawl, but he wasn’t.

I liked everything. I would recommend this book for kids my age.

What B (boy, age 7, second grade) thought- I liked Bombus. The honeybees didn’t think he could fly, but that wasn’t true. The illustrations were also pretty good. In the pictures the honeybees are skinny and Bombus is huge. What to know an interesting fact? The name of the book is Bombus the Bumblebee, right? And the scientific name for bumblebee is bombus.

I liked the whole book, there was nothing I disliked. I would recommend Bombus the Bumblebee for kids my age.

My thoughts-

Wow!! What a great book to teach children about self-acceptance.

Bombus was a lovable bumblebee who wanted to be accepted by others. I can watch my kids playing with others to see how important acceptance and self-acceptance is. I have noticed that the kids who have the best self-acceptance have the best acceptance of others. We (as Bombus) need to remember that God accepts us as we are and we should not take what others say about us to heart.

The illustrations in the this book are great. The honeybees are drawn so well. You can see their haughtiness and how they think they are so much better than Bombus.

I would highly recommend this book to all families. As parents and especially was Christians we need to teach others about self-acceptance and the acceptance of others.

I am always glad to see a reprint of a book that is no longer in print. And this book is certainly one that was worth reprinting.

I had a difficult time getting into this book, but once I got passed the first chapter, I couldn’t put the book down.

John Knox certainly had a tumultuous life. Wow! As a reformer it was difficult living in Scotland in the 1500’s with Queen Mary and the Papacy. I was very glad to learn that he lived to the age of 67. As I read the book I expected to read that he had been killed at a young age.

I would recommend this book! I think in today’s culture, where we in the western world have the freedom to worship the way we want, we need to be reminded of those who helped to give us our freedom worship.

Please read this book as soon as possible!

Lowry and his family are instrumental in helping with the Underground Railroad. Their home is the first stop north of the Ohio River, where from the age of eleven Lowry takes the folks onto the next safe place.

While he is confident with the job he does for his family, he is ashamed of his accent and his father wants him to join him as an abolitionist minister. Will he be able to overcome his fear or will his career be in something else.

About the author-

As a child Stephanie Reed and her family would drive through Ripley on the way to her grandparents. The signs she saw as they drove through Ripley prompted her to write this book.

She lives in Ohio with her husband and two children. She is a volunteer weather spotter.

My thoughts-

What a strong family the Rankins had to be to work against slavery in an area of the country that was so dangerous. Stephanie Reed portrayed their story very well. I could close my eyes and see and feel along with Lowry as he would take the slaves to the next safe spot on the route.

It was mentioned in the “Author’s Note” that the were some pictures of Lowry’s parents. I think it would have been nice to see those pictures and others if possible to help the reader better visualize Ripley, Ohio.

Would I recommend this book to others? Yes! As a matter of fact, I am going to have my children read this book as soon as they are old enough, because this is a wonderful “living book.” For now, I am going to pass it on to my teenage sister to read.

LeAnne Hardy has lived in Johannesburg, South Africa where she taught writing and wrote for HIV/AIDS infected children. She has been a missionary on four continents. She was able to visit the ruined abbey at Glastonbury when she lived in England. She currently lives in Wisconsin with her husband. They have married daughters and two grandchildren.

My thoughts- I thought this book was so good I had to read it twice. I learned more the second time than the first time and I am sure that when I read it again I will learn even more.

The most interesting tidbit of information was about the children's nursery rhyme, “Little Jack Horner.” A man from the abbey had been sent to the king with a pie with the titles of the Abbey manors. The pie was a deed short. The man who now had the manors was Jack Horner.

I have known for many years of the religious upheaval in England’s past. This book really put it into perspective though with the Catholics, Church of England, and the Celtic faith that was still holding on. I really enjoy reading books like this, because you learn more about daily lives and not just names and dates.

I would highly recommend this book for young men, so they can learn of forgiveness and religious conviction. I would also recommend this book to anyone who want to learn more about England in the late 1530’s. I am going to lend this book to my sister now to read, so she can enjoy it too.

My thoughts-

I thought this book was good. I thought the best part was, “Part Four: You-Turn.” This section repeated what had been mentioned in previous chapters, but these chapters showed me how to implement what God has freely given into my daily life.

The discussion questions at the end of each chapter certainly gave me a lot to think about. My favorite questions were in the last chapter, “Giving It Away: Mentoring Others.” The last question asking me who I am laboring for and investing in made me realize that there are people in my life who I need to invest in, so they can be saved in God and walk with him.

One of the features of this book that I thought was interesting what how each of them worked on different chapters, but the chapters flowed seamlessly together. I did notice that there were a lot of quotes from John Piper. I am more interested in his work, because those quotes work well with choosing to move to a northern focus on God instead of the selfish southern focus.

I would recommend this book to everyone, because we all need to make sure we are not “grumbling” in any parts of our daily life.

My thoughts-

Wow!! What a great book. I couldn’t put it down! There were so many ideas to take from this book.

There are more ideas and thoughts than I can list, so here are a few.

We need to believe our product, Jesus, is the best to be able to make a difference. We also need to check the timing, situation and cultural expectations.
Non-Christians are testing us not Jesus.
We need to change the person’s heart, not their culture. We need to become a part of their culture.
Don’t over promise what God can do.
You can’t mass market Jesus, we have to share him person to person.
Tell your true story, no matter how bad it is and keep it simple.

I totally agree with Tim Sinclair that we need to share God/Jesus individually and not mass market him. I need to work much harder on spreading the gospel of Jesus to those I meet every day.

I hope that all of you will read this book to get ideas on how you can spread the good news of Jesus.

My thoughts-

Wow! What a powerful book. I couldn’t put it down. I have studied World War II from textbooks when I was in high school, but all I can remember is facts about Germany, England and the invasion at Pearl Harbor. Heather and Lydia Munn brought Southern France and Julien’s life as well as Nina’s to me so I was able to live vicariously through them.

It must have been very difficult to live in their time, being on the edge of adulthood, but not quite being there yet. I remember being a teen and it was hard enough without a war, so I can’t imagine what it would be like with the threat of war and everybody choosing sides.

God plays such an important role in a young adult’s life, especially during wartime. I was glad to see the role that Julien’s grandfather played in introducing a just and forgiving God to Julien. A young adult needs to know that God forgive us our sins and we need to make sure we forgive others, so we can help lead them to God.

I would recommend this book to all teens as well as adults who wish to learn more about what life was like in southern France during World War II.

About the author- Ray Comfort has written more than 70 books and is a co-host with Kirk Cameron. His blog, Atheist Central, is where he answers questions from atheists.

My thoughts- I was very interested to see what Ray Comfort had to say in this book. I have seen him on his show with Kirk Cameron and I was not impressed. I couldn’t wait to read this book to see if my opinion of him could be changed.

Unfortunately, I was unable to enjoy this book. I thought the questions were very good, but I felt that Ray Comfort failed to completely answer many of the questions. Most of the time it seemed as if he completely avoided the question.

Once in chapter three he said he was impressed by Charles Darwin and later in the chapter he said Charles Darwin was a raving man. It was only when I looked back at the two different passages that I discovered that the first time he was being sarcastic. I would think it may be difficult for some people to realize the sarcasm unless they were really studying this book.

I would not recommend this book. If you want to be able to defend Christianity, it would be best to just study the Bible, so you would know exactly what to say. There is also no harm in telling the person that you need to find the answer and you would get back to them.

Our Experience:

B and C were very excited to get Revenge of the Red Knight book. We used it for our nighttime story and for our daily reading as well. The kids couldn’t wait to read more.

B and C love reading Christian books. The book was exciting with two young children venturing through time and space.

What I Liked:

B and C were very eager to have it read to them.
It was easy enough B could have read it to himself or to his sister.
The importance of honor, justice, prayer, and fair jousting.

What I Disliked:

Not enough of a historical background.

What B (boy, age seven, second grade in the fall) Liked and Disliked:

I loved Revenge of the Red Knight. Why? Sir Andrew is a good knight. He is the same knight who saved Beth and Patrick in Peril in the Palace. There was a tournament against Hugh and Roderick, because Hugh wanted to lock people in Lord Darkthorn’s tower, which he could not do.

I think this book is good for kids my age to read to themselves or to have someone read to them.

What C (girl, age five, kindergarten in the fall) Liked and Disliked:

It was good, good, good. It was fun to learn about knights. Sir Andrew had the ring for the Imagination Station. At the beginning of the book the kids were in a cave full of bats instead of going to Whit’s End.

It is good for kids my age.

Would I Recommend: I would highly recommend Revenge of the Red Knight. It should be in every library.

The Christian focus.
That the kids visit real places and people.
This is a book B could read silently to himself or out-loud to C.
How Beth proves with magnets that the yellow lamas are not using magic.

What I Disliked:

There could be more about Jesus and Christianity.

What B (boy, age seven, second grade in the fall) Liked and Disliked:

I liked Peril in the Palace. I liked that they traveled to China in 1271. In the book, Beth and Patrick got to visit the Shangdu palace. The palace was made out of real gold. I didn’t like that rocs (a type of eagle) carried them to the nest and that Beth got scraped on the leg.

I think this book is great for kids my age to read to themselves or to have parents read to them.

What C (girl, age five, kindergarten in the fall) Liked and Disliked:

Patrick and Beth had to travel in the Imagination Station to China. The yellow lamas used magnets to hold things up in the air, like a pitcher. They did that to show magic, but Kublai Khan didn’t know that. Beth and Patrick scared the yellow lamas with a wind-up toy chicken. Marco Polo who had been with them left them at Shangdu Palace.

I liked this book. Other kids my age should like it too.

Would I Recommend: I would highly recommend Peril at the Palace. It should be in every library.

Our Experience: I really enjoy reading books and I want to be able to pass on the love of literature to my children, so I was really excited to receive this book. As soon as I got it in the mail I sat down to read it and study it.

I have read too many books to remember since first I began reading and this book is excellent for helping to guide me in picking books both for me to read to my children and for them to read to themselves.

My favorite chapter in this book was, “Music, Art and Nature.” This chapter had a lot of useful books/CD’s for us to use during school. I was really excited that our local library system had the items so we were able to check them out.

This is a book I am going to keep on hand for many years to come. I am going to make sure my children read it when they are older.

Considering God’s Creation is adaptable to many different grade levels and uses notebooking pages to explore natural science from a Biblical point of view. There is little for the teacher or student to prepare for. There are different lessons for the universe, Earth, weather, mammals, physiology and more. Our Experience: I was really excited to receive this, because I had been wanting a science program that taught about Biblical creation. I was very impressed when my package came in the mail. I looked at the teacher’s manual and it included everything I would need to say to the children and since each lesson was divided into sections it made it easy adapt to their grade levels by leaving out the digging deeper section. B and C were very interested in starting the program so we started right away doing lesson one. Making the notebook pages were a lot of fun. The kids enjoyed cutting, coloring, gluing and then reading what we have learned about in the lesson. We have been working on one lesson per day and we are now getting ready to study about the weather. We just finished learning about the solar system and the Earth.

What I Liked:

The kids ask at least three separate times every day to do Considering God’s Creation.
The teacher’s manual is very complete.
The integration of Bible verses with explanations.
The notebook pages were very complete and the kids had fun showing their dad what they did.

What I Disliked:

Absolutely Nothing!

What B (boy, age seven, officially in first grade) Liked and Disliked: I love Considering God’s Creation!!!! My favorite so far has been making the notebook pages for “The Rock Cycle,” because I liked making three small booklets. There is also a bigger booklet with a pop-up rainbow on another page. I think considering Considering God’s Creation is great for kids my age.

What C (girl, age five, working on kindergarten) Liked and Disliked: I liked it. It was fun, because we got to make a pop-up rainbow!!!! I liked learning and singing the songs. So far they have all been my favorites! Considering God’s Creation is good for kids my age!

With wonderful photos and descriptions of birds around the world. This book is a wonderful beginning to learn about the specific parts of the bird, evolution versus creation and different birds.

Our Experience: B and C were really excited to receive this book. As soon as this book came in the mail we had to open the package, go outside and begin reading. I decided that we would read about some of the birds first and then we would go to the Introduction and the section on intelligent design. B and C had a lot of fun taking turns picking which bird we would learn about. They couldn’t get enough of learning about each kind of bird. Later on we sat down and read the other sections. B and C did not find the introduction with technicalities of evolution versus creationism very interesting, but they knew it was very important. We all enjoyed reading the section about how God designed the bird species.

What I Liked:

Birds were listed in alphabetical order.
The introduction was very important because it shows us how evolution doesn’t work and how many scientists are turning from it.
The photos of each bird were very good.
The sidebar about each individual bird with included a “special design feature,” “Did you know?” and scientific names.

What I Disliked:

Nothing! This book was wonderful.

What B (boy, age seven) Liked and Disliked: I liked this book . I like learning about birds and how God created them. My favorite bird is the cardinal. My favorite bird in this book was the cassowary. I like the casque (horny growth like a helmet), because it looks cool. If you want to learn more buy this book! I think this book is very good for kids my age.

What C (girl, age five) Liked and Disliked: I liked everything about this book. My favorite bird in this book was the bald eagle. The bald eagle is mostly black and it has a yellow beak and talons with a white head. I liked the Introduction and the section on intelligent design. This book is good for kids my age!

I would highly recommend this book! It should be in every library.

Our Experience: The website recommends doing Mad Dog Math for 10 minutes per day, so that is what we strived to do.

This was a program that B had a bit of problem for some reason. I think it was because he has never practiced addition and subtraction by families before. He was also stressed with solving 20 problems in two minutes, when it was timed. B and I butted heads a bit and so he did the program with Dad. It helped out a lot and he ended up having a lot of fun.

C worked on doing the program without being timed until she felt comfortable timing it. She seemed to have a lot of fun and was always eager to work on her problems.

What I Liked:

The problems were divided up into small fact families.
There were three levels which helped reinforce the fact families.
Good instructions with the software, explaining how to do the program.

What I Disliked:

For example, you had to know all the fact families of addition, before you got the club sticker for each time level. For some kids they need to be rewarded more often. It makes the game more rewarding.

What B (boy, age seven, officially in first grade) Liked and Disliked: It was very fun. I am all the way up to “9 to 11 Subtract.” Some parts were tricky. In the parts that were really tricky, I did not use “Time Me.” I couldn’t move on until I used the “Time Me” button. I think Mad Dog Math is good for kids my age.

What C (girl, age five, working on kindergarten) Liked and Disliked: It was fun. Most of the time I got them wrong, but I tried all over again. I did it with no timing and with timing. It was good for kids my age.

What Dad Liked and Disliked: I liked what Mom liked. The only thing I disliked is that when you complete the 20th problem the test automatically stopped. You do not get a chance to review your answers before being corrected. It would be helpful if you could manually stop the test when you are done in addition to the test stopping at the 2 minute mark.

Our Experience:

While I was unsure of doing an exercise program, B and C were very excited. I enrolled them in Zoodoos (k-5th) and we selected our first workout. We had a choice to either select a pre-made workout or build one ourselves. We have mainly focused on the workout for k-2nd, but we have also tried the 3rd-5th workouts. The workouts lasted between 14-20 minutes and left the kids wanting more. After the workouts the kids watched short videos and/or answered questions about nutrition, motivation and wellness. They were able to earn points to add clothes or accessories to their avatar. B and C have had a lot of fun providing their avatar with shoes, pets and watches.

What I Liked:

How excited B and C are to do it every day.
You can either build your own workout or do one they have built.
That each workout had warm up, cardio, strength and flexibility.

What I Disliked:

I could not enlarge the video to fill my computer screen for easier viewing.

What B (boy, age seven, officially in first grade) Liked and Disliked: We have done some k-2nd workouts and one 3rd-5th workout. GoTrybe was very good, because you got to exercise a lot. I like exercising. We did squats, jumping jacks, the swimmer and jogged in place. My favorite was running in a triangle, picking up bean bags and putting them back. If you want to learn more about what we did, try the free one day trial. I think GoTrybe is great for kids my age! I think Momma liked it too!

What C (girl, age five, working on kindergarten) Liked and Disliked: It is good for kids my age, because it had tricky workouts. I liked doing the swimmer in one of the k-2nd workouts. It had jumping jacks. It was fun. It is only available on the internet, unless you went to Tennessee where they are, which you can do if you send them an e-mail.

Our Experience:

B was excited to to read this book. He had read the first chapter and he couldn’t wait to finish the book. After B finished the book, I read the book to both of them as a bedtime story. Both B and C enjoyed the story.

I then printed out the activity sheets and we spent a couple of days working on the activities and coloring the pictures. B and C enjoyed learning more about the parts of a train engine and different exhibits at the fair.

What I Liked:

The book has large print with pictures, so it is fun for beginning readers to read.
The activity books that go with the books.
This book is about character building.

What I Disliked:

The negative attitude towards sheep as Andi’s family had cattle.

What B (boy, age seven, officially in first grade) Liked and Disliked: I liked Andi’s Fair Surprise. There were activity pages available from the internet that contained information about steam engines. In the book, Andi wants to take Taffy to the fair and Chad, her big brother says she can’t. At the fair she does the ring toss, hoping to win a hat with a red feather. I think this book is very good for kids my age, because Andi gets a surprise.

What C (girl, age five, working on kindergarten) Liked and Disliked: I loved Andi’s Fair Surprise! It was fun to listen to Momma read it. I liked that Andi almost got the black sheep and went on a train ride. They got to sleep in a hotel. The activity sheets and coloring pages were fu-un. I had fun giving the character ribbons, from the activity pages, to my family. This is a good book for parents to read to kids my age.

Bonus!- Chalk-It-Easy Chalk Art Lesson

B and C were really excited about having drawing lessons, because art is one of their favorite subjects. We made a special trip to the store to buy them their own special drawing tools and then got to work learning the lessons.

The children had fun watching the lessons and learning how to draw lines on the paper. Next they learned contour drawing with apples. They had to draw at least ten apples, before they started. When they drew two apples together they were able to use pencil, charcoal and black marker. In their own sections you can see how their contour charcoal drawings of apples turned out.

The lesson that proved to be the most difficult was Lesson 4, because it was very hard for B and C to do contour drawings of a shoe. They became very frustrated and we needed to stop doing it.

We have also done the bonus chalk art lesson. The kids had a lot of fun using the chalk. The benefit of using chalk was that perfection was not required. The pictures they did of Cross Hill are below. It did take us two hours to do it, so plan on lots of time when you do this lesson.

What I liked:

I never took drawing lessons, so it was great to have step by step lessons.
The kids were really interested in learning more.
They liked being able to draw with different tools.

What I Disliked:

Lesson 4 was about drawing the contours of a shoe and was too difficult for B and C.

What B (boy, age seven officially in first grade) Liked and Disliked: It was tricky to learn how to draw an apple, but I learned how to do it. There was only one thing I disliked. In Lesson 4, I had to draw a shoe. And drawing a shoe was very tricky. I liked the bonus chalk lesson of drawing Cross Hill. It is a beautiful picture. I think See the Light is great for kids my age!

What C (girl, age five working on kindergarten) Liked and Disliked: I loved the art lessons! I did all the lessons. The Chalk Art picture was fun. And smudging the charcoal was fun. It was good for kids my age.

What Dad Thought: "See the Light" art program had some ups and downs. I liked that in the first lesson they taught you to draw what you see not what you know. For example, you now that a coffee mug has a handle but if you turn it just right you won't see it. If you don't see it, even thought you know it's there, don't draw it. The chalk lesson was presented exceptionally well so that B & C picked up on the ideas to create a chalk picture. Adding scripture relevancy to the art was a nice touch.

What I didn't like was in the 2nd part of the fourth lesson was the drawing of the shoe. It seemed a bit complex for a 5 & 7 year old. I remember beginning with basic shapes and shading. Going directly to a shoe was a big step. Also, the concept of learning to draw was nullified as the presenter was drawing a shoe that had already been traced out on the piece of paper. My kids already know how to trace. It should have been a new, free-hand drawing to really be a teaching tool.

Overall, the program seemed advanced for B & C with the exception of the noted things I liked previously mentioned. Using a traced outline to teach free-hand drawing is contrary to what they were trying to teach and therefore I do not recommend this product.

This video does a wonderful job of describing the program!

Karri Gregor is the founder of Kinderbach. She began developing the program when her daughter was born, so her children could have a solid music foundation as she had as a young child.

Dodi the Donkey, Frisco, Carla the Caterpillar, Edward the Eagle, Felicity the Frog, Gracie the Gorilla, Alan the Alligator and Bob the Bear are the characters that help the children learn the keys on the staff and keyboard.

Each week has an introduction and four lessons. Each lesson takes five to ten minutes and they all build on each other, so the child learns the material.

There are six areas of music development that will be learned in different lessons: ear or listening skills, sight or note reading, rhythm, hand position or technique, singing and composition.

Currently there are six levels with a total of 60 lessons. Level Seven will be out in August of 2011 with more fun lessons!

Our Experience: We were very excited to be able to review this program, because we have a piano and the children have been wanting to learn how to play.

I watched a couple of the lessons and decided that we could do one week per day as the daily lessons did not take much time and there was so much repetition. This method has worked very well so far, but I know that soon it will change, because the daily lessons are getting longer.

The kids had fun finding their rhythm instruments at the beginning of each lesson and then banging to the beat during the songs. Coloring sheets were also a lot of fun for C, but B was not as interested in coloring them. They both had fun playing on the piano with the new songs they were learning.

What I Liked:

It was nice that there were PDF downloads for each of the lessons so I could print off as many copies as I needed.
The kids were excited each time we did a lesson.
I liked the list of curriculum, so I knew what each level contained.

What I Disliked:

I thought there was too much repetition. I didn’t think that 14 weeks of lessons were necessary to learn where the D key was located.
It was difficult for us in the beginning to play the songs with the background music, because we could not hear the beat.
The audio was not level. Some parts were very loud and some were so quiet that we needed external speakers for my laptop.

What B (boy, age seven, officially in first Grade) Likes and Dislikes: I like Kinderbach. You learn how to play the piano. Right now we are working on Carla, Dodi and Edward, notes C, D and E. It is really fun learning the piano. There are coloring pages and other fun pages like, making your own song! I think this program is very good for kids my age.

Below is one of my favorite parts of the lesson!

What C (girl, age five, working on Kindergarten) Liked and Disliked: I liked Kinderbach! I liked the Finger Number Polka, because it was fun country singers and gluing them on the paper hands. And then possibly cut the hands out and stick them on our own hands. I playing the songs on the piano. Jake was a funny dog. There were crazy voices. It is good for kids my age!

What Dad Said: What I liked about Kinderbach is that they focus on building a strong foundation in the basics of music. While it is primarily applied to the piano it can be carried over to other instruments. B & C enjoy the lessons and variety that Kinderbach provides.

What I disliked was that the lessons seemed to move slowly while building the basic foundation. As an adult I do expect information and results to come at a faster pace. However, B & C really enjoy this program and are showing tremendous progress. The program works despite my impatience.

Overall, if your child (or children) really like Kinderbach and show progress, stick with it.

Our Experience: We were very excited to review Song School Latin, because my sister is fluent in Latin. And this was a wonderful way to help our family begin to learn the basics.

We chose to do a lesson a week.

Day 1- learn the vocab and songs
Day 2- Work on coloring sheets and listen to songs
Days 3 and 4- complete the workbook pages
Day 5- review current and past lessons through the songs

This method has worked very well for us and the kids are enjoying learning new words and phrases that they can use in their every day world.

What I Liked:

The songs were fun and it helped B and C to learn the vocabulary.
I thought the teacher’s edition was helpful, because it had the answers and extra worksheets that could be copied.
Each chapter had the perfect amount of vocabulary, songs and workbook activity to make it perfect for a week.
Having a review section every couple of chapters, really helped to reinforce the vocabulary.

What I Disliked:

It would have been nice to learn numbers and colors.
The kids would have also enjoyed learning aunt, uncle, grandmother and grandfather.
An e-book option of the workbook would be nice, so multiple copies can be easily made.

What B (boy, age seven and officially in first grade) Liked and Disliked: Salve! Quid est tuum praenomen? Meum praenomen est B. Quid agis? Sum optime!

I like learning new languages. Right now we are concentrating on Latin. We are having fun doing Song School Latin. My aunt knows Latin and we are going to have a secret club. In our secret club we are only going to speak Latin.

We learn a few new phrases or words in each chapter. There are coloring sheets you can download from the website, then color. Here are some words we have learned; casa, porta, murus, fenestra, frater, soror and mater. There are songs to go with each chapter. I like the songs.

I think this product is good for kids my age. I can’t wait to learn more Latin!

What C (girl, age five working on Kindergarten) Liked and Disliked: It was fun! I liked singing the songs and coloring the color pages. I like learning new languages. My aunt knows Latin, now I will be able to speak with her. I liked all of things in Song School Latin. It is good for kids my age.

What Dad Thought: I liked that the Song School program used simple ideas to teach Latin to kids. It was fun and easy to do. B and C both enjoyed it and used what they had learned at various times of the day when talking with each other.

What could have been better was to teach manners, colors and numbers after learning basic greeting dialog.

Overall Song School Latin is a good program and we'll keep teaching it to B and C.

Reading Kingdom has been developed by Dr. Marion Blank and two others. Reading Kingdom is different from other programs as it does not focus on phonics.

Your child will be learning sequencing, motor skills, sounds, meaning, grammar and comprehension.

Since Reading Kingdom customizes itself to your child they will never have anything too challenging or not challenging enough and each session lasts 15-30 minutes. There are five levels, which will take the average child 12-15 months to complete. If your child can already read it may take less time for your child to read and write at a third grade level.

Our Experience:

Since B is seven and C is five I knew we did not need to practice using the mouse and keyboard, so the first thing they did was take the “Skills Survey” to learn where they were going to be placed. C was placed in both “Seeing Sequences” and “Letter Land.” B was placed in “Letter Land” where he was going to be practicing keyboarding skills. C was going to practice sequencing and keyboarding skills.

It took B about a week to finish “Letter Land” and it took C about two weeks to finish both of her activities. After that they took another “Skills Survey” that placed them both in level 1. They are learning words such as kids, eat, fly, can, and fly. As they learn and master new words they are given books to read. In level 1 there are six books to be read.

Both B and C are working hard on Level 1 and I think B will be moving on to Level 2 soon.

What I Like:

I receive e-mails telling me the progress the kids have made.
I am not to help the kids. That is helpful, because then I can work with B on math while C does Reading Kingdom and vice versa.

B can read well, but this helps him learn how to spell.

What I Dislike:

Sometimes it seems as if C is not really learning, because the program can read the words to her.
Picking more than one of the extra activities at the end of the lesson made it very long for both of the kids.
I think it would be helpful if they were learning proper keyboarding techniques, so they wouldn’t hunt and peck.

What B (age seven, officially in first grade) thinks: I think Reading Kingdom is very fun. The first part of the lesson, in the section that I am doing, I can do one of three things; read a book, type a new word or write in a book. And the books are short, so on those days I do two lessons. There is also a section that has two parts learning new words in a notebook or typing new words with no help. The second part of the lesson is a part where you click on a word that has missing letters then you type in those missing letters. I think Reading Kingdom is great for kids my age, because you learn new words and how to spell them.

What C (age five, working on kindergarten) thinks: It is fun. I like doing it every single day. I like reading the stories. I like the part where I have to find specific words in order. And the space part where I clicked on the words that I was supposed to type. I liked everything and it is good for kids my age.

What Dad Thought: As I observed B & C doing their Reading Kingdom lessons I was impressed with the content and the timing. It’s kept simple by focusing on one subject for the entire lesson. The amount of time given is enough for B & C to complete each task without being rushed or bored by waiting for the lesson to move on. Each lesson is about 5 – 10 minutes long and that works really well for the kids. Reading Kingdom is a great program.

One day Sideswipe, Optimus Prime, Skyburst, and Battle Blade Bumblebee were going out on a drive. Then suddenly Starscream appeared in front of them and Megatron too. Smolder with Chopster showed up. Then there was a battle and Megatron won the battle. Optimus Prime and the others lost, but then in the night Optimus Prime and the others snuck out and had a battle in the night with Megatron.
