Read Aloud Challenge- October 22, 2013

We have not been reading aloud as much as I would like to during our days, so next week I am going to change the name of this post.  The new name of the post is, “Reading Challenge.”  In this post I will list the books the children have been reading to themselves and what I have been reading to them. 

C finished listening to Anne of Avonlea by L. M. Montgomery.  I think she really enjoyed listening to it. 

We took a drive a week ago and listened to Stallion by Starlight, by Mary Pope Osborne.  It was about Alexander the Great when he was a child.  We really enjoyed learning about him.

For fun we are reading Diary of a Real Payne Book 1: True Story, by Annie Tipton.  This book has had the children begging for more.  I will be posting a review in the next couple of days.

We recently did a unit study about George Washington and I just happened to come across, Revolutionary Friends: General George Washington and the Marquis de Lafayette, by Selene Castrovilla.  This was a wonderful picture book and a great conclusion to our unit study.

Unfortunately that is all we have read this past week.  So next week I am going to try to read more to the children and I will mention what the children have been reading.

Read Aloud Challenge- October 16, 2013

We have been having fun listening and reading to stories this past week.

C has been reading aloud to me this past week out of her own books!  I am excited to hear her improvement.

The three of us are no longer listening to Anne of Avonlea by L. M. Montgomery.  B didn’t want to listen to it anymore.  We took a drive on Tuesday and listened to Stallion by Starlight, by Mary Pope Osborne.  It was about Alexander the Great.

For fun we are reading Diary of a Real Payne Book 1: True Story, by Annie Tipton.  This book has the children begging for more.  The review will be coming between October 18-25, so tune in then.

We haven’t been reading aloud as much as I would like to, the days just go by so quickly.  It seems as if we run out of time to read aloud.  Have a wonderful week!

Read Aloud Challenge- October 8, 2013

We have been having fun listening and reading to stories this past week.

I am having C read to me every day for twenty minutes.  She is currently reading Princess Posey and the Tiny Treasure, by Stephanie Greene, and illustrated by, Stephanie Roth Sisson.  She doesn’t like reading it to me though, so I might have to read it to myself and let her find the books she wants to read to me.

C has also been listening to CDs in her room.  She is listening to some of the Magic Tree House books this week.  I don’t think B is listening to anything in his room right now.  The three of us are listening to Anne of Avonlea by L. M. Montgomery.  We have been listening to it when we drive places.

For fun we are reading Diary of a Real Payne Book 1: True Story, by Annie Tipton.  This book has the children begging for more.  The review will be coming between October 18-25, so tune in then.

I also read some pictures books to the children this week:

• When Stravinsky met Nijinsky by Lauren Stringer
• Daredevil: The Daring Life of Betty Skelton by Meghan McCarthy (an awesome book)
• Thunderstorm by Arthur Geisert (another awesome book)
• Water in the Park: A book about water & the times of the day by Emily Jenkins and illustrated by Stephanie Graegin

Read Aloud Challenge- October 1, 2013

We have been having fun listening and reading to stories this past week.

I am having C read to me every day for twenty minutes.  She is currently reading Princess Posey and the Tiny Treasure, by Stephanie Greene, and illustrated by, Stephanie Roth Sisson.  It is about a young girl, Posey, who gets a tiny stuffed pig who clips on her finger.  She takes it to school, where her teacher has to take it away, because of the consequences rule. 

C has also been listening to CDs in her room.  She is listening to some of the Boxcar Children this week.  I don’t think B is listening to anything in his room right now.  The three of us are listening to Anne of Avonlea by L. M. Montgomery.  I wanted a good book to listen to while we eat instead of always watching television.  We haven’t been listening to it while we eat, but we have been listening to it when we drive around.

For fun we are reading Diary of a Real Payne Book 1: True Story, by Annie Tipton.  This book has the children begging for more.  The review will be coming between October 18-25, so tune in then.

Read Aloud Challenge- September 24, 2013

Now that school is in full swing we are reading aloud a lot more.

I am having C read to me every day for twenty minutes.  She is currently reading Princess Posey and the Tiny Treasure, by Stephanie Greene, and illustrated by, Stephanie Roth Sisson.  It is about a young girl, Posey, who gets a tiny stuffed pig who clips on her finger.  She takes it to school, where her teacher has to take it away, because of the consequences rule.  There are other books in the series.  I am excited to find this series, because it is the first set of chapter books that C can easily read.

C has also been listening to CDs in her room.  She has been listening to On the Banks of Plum Creek.  I don’t think B is listening to anything in his room right now.  The three of us are listening to Anne of Avonlea by L. M. Montgomery.  I wanted a good book to listen to while we eat instead of always watching television.  If anyone has any ideas of good books with boys as the main characters, I would enjoy the suggestions.

For science we are reading Galen and the Gateway to Medicine, by Jeanne Bendick.  He was a medical researcher who was born in 129 A.D.  His works and writings were the standard of authority for the next 1300 years.

Read Aloud Challenge for the Week of September 15, 2013

We are getting started back into school now, so I am reading more books to the children.

For science we are reading Galen and the Gateway to Medicine, by Jeanne Bendick.  B, C, and I are enjoying it.

For history we are reading George Washington: True Patriot, by Janet and Geoff Benge.  The review is coming soon, so we will be able to give you our opinions.

C is really getting into reading and this week she is reading Princess Posey and the Tiny Treasure, by Stephanie Greene, to me.  We are enjoying it.

Read Aloud Challenge- Week of August 25, 2010

I can’t believe that it is getting so close to fall.  Our temperatures are still in the 80’s and the garden is growing very well.  Soon we will officially begin school again and I will have so many more books to tell you about.  We just have not been reading aloud very much this summer.  C just had a picture book read to her and we have been trying to read a little bit every day.

We took a trip last week and we listen to Anne of Green Gables by L. M. Montgomery.  B and C have really enjoyed listening to it.  I have too.  We just have two more disks to listen to.  I think we will need to use the computer to finish listening to them and we can get it returned to the library.

Read Aloud Challenge for the Week of August 11, 2013

I can’t believe that summer is almost over.  It has gone by so quickly.  Have you been reading aloud in your family?  We have been doing it, but not on a consistently. 

I have been reading Berenstain Bears books to both B and C.  Every time we go to the library they have to check them out and also Curious George books.

In the pickup we have been listening to Anne of Green Gables by L. M. Montgomery.  I think they are enjoying it.

Read Aloud Challenge! Week of July 28, 2013

We are not reading very much aloud, but the kids have been reading to themselves.  I have read some picture books to the kids this week and we always have books on CD for the rides to town.  We don’t go to town very much though, don’t want to waste the gas.

We finished 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.  We are now reading Black Beauty, by Anne Sewell.  The kids and I are really enjoying it.  I think we will be listening to the last disk on the way back home today (we are at the library right now).

Read Aloud Challenge!- Week of July 21, 2013

Last week I told you that we would be reading aloud more.  Not yet, not everyone was available yesterday or today.  I did read a couple of pictures books to B and C yesterday about the skeleton and the Indian Paintbrush.

The book about Indian Paintbrush was by Tomie dePaola and was called, The Legend of the Indian Paintbrush.  I’m not going to give too many details of this book, but it is about a young Indian artist who wants to paint the sunset in vivid colors.

We are still working 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.  I think we will be listening to the last disk on the way back home today (we are at the library right now).

I hope there will be more reading aloud this week.

Read Aloud Challenge- Week of July 14, 2013

We are still not reading a lot this summer, next week it is going to change!  We are going to be doing an hour of school a day with the cousins, so we will be reading history and science.  I want to finish B and C’s books for school.

We are listening to 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, by Jules Verne.  We are still enjoying it.  I hope that we finish it today.  We are on disk nine of twelve.

Read Aloud Challenge for the Week of July 7, 2013

We have not been reading a lot this summer.  Summer time for us, is for playing with cousins and working outside on the ranch. 

We decided to listen to 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, by Jules Verne, this summer as we travel back and forth to town.  We are about halfway through.  B and C are really enjoying it. 

We are still working on Tunnel of Gold, by Susan K. Marlow.  The review for it will be coming in the next week!

Read Aloud Challenge- July 2, 2013

We have not been reading a lot this summer.  The summer time at our house is for playing and working outside.  When we travel to town we have been listening to books on CD and I have been reading two review books to the children.

B and C enjoyed listening to Around the World in 80 Days by Jules Verne that we decided to listen to 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.  We haven’t gotten to far into it yet, but we have enjoyed it so far.

I am reading, Anselm of Canterbury, by Simonetta Carr, to the children.  You will have to read the review later this week to see if we enjoyed it or not.  I am really enjoying it so far.

We are also working on Tunnel of Gold, Susan K. Marlow.  We have been learning a lot so far.

Read Aloud Challenge- Week of June 23rd, 2013

I hope you have been able to read aloud more than we have lately.  Since we have come to the ranch the time has been limited and the atmosphere is just so different compared to our house in the city.

We have been reading a book by Susan K. Marlow.  It is called Tunnel of Gold and the review will be coming in the next few weeks.  I can’t wait to tell you about it.

We have also been listening to, The Wilder Life: My Adventures in the Lost World of Little House on the Prairie.  Wendy McClure is the author and she is trying to find the real Laura.  She travels to the sites and just immerses herself as much as she can.  There are some words used that I don’t approve of, but I have not mentioned them and I have not heard the children use them.  We are enjoying it and can’t wait to listen to, Little House 0n the Prairie.

Read Aloud Challenge- May 16, 2013

What have you been reading aloud lately?  We have been reading for fun and school.  Here is what we have been reading.

We are still reading, Moccasin Trail by Eloise Jarvis McGraw.  It is about a young man, Jim Keith, who has lived as Crow Indian and is now a trapper.  He learns that his sister and younger brothers are on their way west.  He decides to meet with them and help them.  We are almost done reading this book and we love it.

We recently finished reading two picture books, The Beetle Book by Steve Jenkins and Welcome to the USA: Wyoming by Ann Heinrichs and illustrated by Matt Kania.

We have finally finished listening to the CD of Around the World in 80 Days by Jules Verne.  We loved listening to it.  B’s favorite part of the book was all of the locations that were mentioned.

We are going on a trip this weekend.  We will be listening to Roughing It, by Mark Twain.  I hope we like it.

Read Aloud Challenge for the week of May 12, 2013

What have you been reading aloud lately?  We have been busy reading books for fun and school.

We are still reading, Moccasin Trail by Eloise Jarvis McGraw.  It is about a young man, Jim Keith, who has lived as Crow Indian and is now a trapper.  He learns that his sister and younger brothers are on their way west.  He decides to meet with them and help them.  Jim and his family have made it past the Dalles and are now in the Willamette Valley.  We are only halfway through this book, so there will be a lot more to share.

We are currently reading City, by David Macaulay.  We are really enjoying it, but we haven’t read it yet this week.  We really need to work on reading it.

We took a day trip this week and listened to From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by E. L. Konigsburg.  I think everyone enjoyed listening to it.  It has always been one of my favorite books.

What have you been reading aloud lately?  We have been busy reading books both for school and review.

Our favorite book that we are reading aloud right now is, One Minute Mysteries: 65 More Short Mysteries You Solve with Science!  by Eric Yoder and Natalie Yoder.  Our review will be coming soon, so you will have to be checking back to learn what we really thought.  I will say we are enjoying solving the mysteries

We are still reading, Moccasin Trail by Eloise Jarvis McGraw.  It is about a young man, Jim Keith, who has lived as Crow Indian and is now a trapper.  He learns that his sister and younger brothers are on their way west.  He decides to meet with them and help them.  We are currently at the part where he meets his brother for the first time in years.

We are currently reading City, by David Macaulay.  We are really enjoying it.  I am having the children work on projects like making a salt-dough and popsicle stick city and drawings of city plans.

We have also been reading some picture books for fun.  Knit Your Bit, by Deborah Hopkinson, is a World War 1 story about a “Knit-In” event at Central Park in 1918.  It’s the boys versus the girls.

The other fun book was, Too Tall Houses, by Gianna Marino.  Owl and Rabbit are arguing about how tall their houses should be.  Will the houses grow so tall they reach the sky?

What have you been reading aloud lately?  We have been busy reading books both for school and review.

Our favorite book that we are reading aloud right now is, One Minute Mysteries: 65 More Short Mysteries You Solve with Science!  by Eric Yoder and Natalie Yoder.  Our review will be coming soon, so you will have to be checking back to learn what we really thought.

We are studying Ancient Rome and this week we have reading a picture book by Diane Stanley and illustrated by Peter Vennema, called Cleopatra.  It tells the story of Cleopatra and her life with Julius Caesar and Mark Antony.  You can see a sample here.

Last week we started reading, Moccasin Trail by Eloise Jarvis McGraw.  It is about a young man, Jim Keith, who has lived as Crow Indian and is now a trapper.  He learns that his sister and younger brothers are on their way west.  He decides to meet with them and help them. 

Another book we will be reading this week, is City, by David Macaulay.  We are really looking forward to learning more about Roman architecture.

Wow, this year is going by so quickly.  Here are more of the books that we have been having fun reading.

Texas facts and symbols by Emily McAuliffe.

Kate and Pippin: An Unlikely Love Story by Martin Springett and photographs by Isobel Springett- About a Great Dane and a fawn.

The Oregon Trail: Yesterday and Today by William E. Hill- We discussed the illustrations.

Your Life as a Pioneer on the Oregon Trail by Jessica Gunderson and illustrated by Rachel Dougherty- Pretty good.

Roughing It on the Oregon Trail by Diane Stanley and illustrated by Holly Berry part of the Jump Back in Time with the Time-Traveling with Twins series- A very good picture book.

B and C listed to volume 41 of The Boxcar Children Collection on CD, again.

We went to the library this past Saturday.  When we got home B read, Coyote's Christmas by S. D. Nelson and Super Babies' dream adventure by Christine Ricci to C.

We are almost done reading Hilda the Briton by Emma Leslie.  Our review is coming later this week!

We are continuing our study of insects in Christian Liberty Nature Reader Book 3.  This week we are reading about beetles.
